Joe Mauer and Wife Expecting Twins

When word came that Minnesota Twins superstar Joe Mauer and his Maddie were expecting twins...I'm pretty sure fans from Rochester to Fergus Falls completely lost their mind.

Yup, the guy who, when it's all said and done, might supplant Kirby Puckett or Harmon Killebrew as "Mr. Twin" is about to have twins of his own.  And it does make sense though, right?  Mauer was born in St. Paul, grew up a Twins fan and was drafted first overall by his hometown team in 2001.
 
"Obviously, we're both really excited and couldn't be happier," Mauer said on Wednesday.  "Everything so far is good." 

Oh, before you ask, no, the 2009 American League MVP will not be the first Twins player to father Twins.  According to the boys over at Larry Brown Sports, Denny Hocking, who played with the Twins from 1993-2003, and his wife had twins while he was playing for the team.

No word as to whether or not  Mauer and the Mrs. are expecting boys or girls (or one of each), but, well, I'm sure they'll be born with "great lookin' hair".
 

Joe Mauer's Brother to Manage Twins Farm Team

When it came to finding the skipper for their new Class-A affiliate, the Minnesota Twins looked no further than the brother of their superstar Joe Mauer.

On Wednesday, the Cedar Rapids Kernals named the five-time All-Star's older brother their manager.

“I’ve been ‘Joe Mauer’s brother’ a long time,” Jake Mauer told KCRG. “We’re very proud of what he has become, what kind of person he is. I don’t take offense to it.”

Believe it or not, this is actually the seventh season the elder Mauer has been in the Twins system.  The 34-year-old has spent the last four seasons at high-A Fort Myers. His first two years as a manager also were in Fort Myers, but with the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League Twins.

It's easy to poke fun at the fact that Jake's career in the dugout just happens to coincide with his younger brother's rise to prominence behind the plate, but being known as "Joe's brother" and working in the Twins organization is probably better than beng pigeon holed as "Billy's brother" and selling cars.

“I used to sell cars,” he said. “I’ll jump in there every now and then still when they need help. But mostly I just help manage the sales floor.”

Sure he does.

Is it just me or are we seeing more Major Leaguers doing commercials?

Sure, most of them are for baseball-related products (video games, shoes, etc.)...but shampoo?  I mean, not since the days of Roger Clemens getting Zest-fully clean have we seen a big leaguer pimping shower supplies.

Okay...maybe it hasn't been THAT long.

So, enter Joe Mauer and the latest marketing campaign from Head and Shoulders. 

The Minnesota Twins catcher is known more for his sideburns than his head of hair (a guy like Tim Lincecum might have been more of an obvious choice), but put him next to Pittsburgh Steelers stud Troy Polamalu and you've kinda got commercial gold. 

Or at least something better than the milk commercial he did with his mom.
