Alright...Who Wants a Jersey?

It appears as though Atlanta Braves reliever Peter Moylan has figured out a way to cut through the Casey Anthony Trial Twitter clutter.

Offer his followers a free jersey.

I’ve seen a lot of players offer a lot of different things via Twitter…but a jersey? Never.

Sure, the tattooed hurler has just a fraction of the followers Nick Swisher has, but I’ve never seen the New York Yankees outfielder offer up swag.

And in case you were wondering…no, Moylan didn’t make The Hall’s pre-season "Baseball Players to Follow" list. But something tells me the Aussie knows what to do to change that.

Hint hint.

Twitter Tuesday: Michael Schlact

I'm pretty sure it started out innocently enough...Southern Maryland Blue Crabs pitcher Michael Schlact decided he was going to live tweet Monday night's bustrip.

It was all there.

Tales of teammates and their bizarre eating habits...pictures of uncomfortable sleeping arrangements.

But then...IT happened. The unthinkable.  The bus broke down.

What ensued was pure Twitter hilarity...but the former Texas Rangers farmhand stayed optimistic.

It's okay folks, I've always wanted to see the Bronx. This is like a sightseeing tour. From the side of the highway.

I'm not going to re-post all the gold that came from #LiveRoadTripTweeting, you can catch up by following Schlact on Twitter.  Suffice it to say, it ranks right up there alongside the night the righty posted pictures of his recently carved jack-o-lantern.

So, thank you, Michael Schlact for making #LiveRoadTripTweeting a joy this Monday evening.  Please post a picture of that "I LOVE NY" shirt soon.

Twitter Tuesday: Richmond Flying Squirrels

All this week we’re celebrating the 40th anniversary of Ross Grimsley’s Major League debut and this week's Twitter Tuesday is no different.

Grimsley, of course, pitched 11 big league seasons, but did you know that in 1989, he began a second career as a Minor League pitching coach?

It’s true.

Currently, “Scuz” is in his second season with the Double-A affiliate of the World Champion San Francisco Giants…the social media savvy Richmond Flying Squirrels.

Now, I’m not sure who is doing the actual tweeting for the team, but whoever it is…they’re doing it with just the right mix of live tweeting, posting pictures and keeping their followers engaged with team promotions.

And, of course, there’s this:

Looks like a reinactment of the truffle shuffle from the Goonies more than the chicken dance. but the crowd loves it!

Twitter Tuesday: The Death of bin Laden

I’m pretty confident the spontaneous chant of “USA…USA” that broke out in Philadelphia after the news broke of the death of Osama bin Laden is something that will be shown over and over and over again.

But it wasn’t just at Citizens Bank Park…the imagery splashed across TVs everywhere was that of jubilance and celebration.

That said, the outpouring of sentiment that hit the Twittersphere was as equally (if not more) amazing. And included in the flood of emotion were tweets by some of baseball’s most prolific users of the social media platform.

This site has been as guilty as any when it comes to bashing (click HERE, HERE or HERE) former "Bash Brother" Jose Canseco.

And it's been warranted...are you following the dude on Twitter?

So, for fun, I thought I'd check and see what kind of messages the 1988 American League MVP after he tweeted the following Monday night:

A pretty nice gesture...right? Well, within an hour of his tweet, a mixed bag of messages emerged.

Twitter Tuesday: Collin Balester

By now, you've probably heard of Movember.

If not, here's the skinny...courtesy of Movember.com:

Each Movember we challenge men to change their appearance and the face of men's health by growing a moustache. The moustache is our ribbon, the means by which we raise awareness and funds for cancers that affect men. Much like the commitment to run or walk for charity, our commitment is to grow a moustache for 30 days. Funds raised benefit the Prostate Cancer Foundation and LIVESTRONG.

One Major Leaguer who has embraced the mustache is Washington Nationals reliever Collin Balester.  Throughout most of his big league career, the right-hander has worn a 'stache and this November is no different.

"I'm just trying to challenge Major League Baseball players," Balester said in an interview with MLB.com earlier this month. "If baseball players could all join together for a great cause, I think we could raise a lot, because there are no better fans than baseball fans. If we could get some guys to jump on board and see what they could do, we could do something great."

I found Balester on Twitter a while back and suffice it to say...he's equally as good at tweeting about mustaches as he his tweeting about baseball.

It all started innocent enough when Texas Rangers Minor Leaguer pitcher Michael Schlact tweeted a picture of his pumpkin.

And no, sickos, "pumpkin" isn't some lame euphemism or veiled reference to whatever it was Brett Favre did or didn't send to Jenn Sterger.  Schlact actually tweeted a picture of his pumpkin...the jack-o-latern shown above.

Minutes later...everyone's a critic.

Alright...this is going to be a dumb statement to make, but the coolest thing about Twitter is that you never know what tweet you'll read next.

Sometimes, a guy like David Price will let his emotions run wild and sound off against his team's fans.

Twitter Tuesday: Carl Pavano's Mustache

From now until Friday, my good friends at the American Mustache Institute are taking applications for their annual "Robert Goulet Memorial Mustached American of the Year" award.

Last year, The Hall of Very Good supported Arizona Diamondbacks reliever Clay Zavada and the outcome...victory.

This year...the thinktank is asking for your support of Minnesota Twins pitcher Carl Pavano.

That's right, the former future ex-Mr. Alyssa Milano (you following me?) decided to ditch the spousal compromise (his goatee) in favor of the full on mustache. And along with it...the righty was able to string together 17 wins, a 3.75 ERA and lead the Twinkies to the American League Central crown.

Oh...and did I mention that Pavano's mustache has spawned t-shirts (you can check out a couple HERE or HERE)? Take THAT Eric Holder!

And what about the 34 year-old's glorious 'stache on Twitter? Yes, please.

After seeing a mere 12,446 fans in the stands, Tampa Bay Rays pitcher David Price hit the Twitters Monday night and tweeted the following about what would be his team's fourth-lowest home attendance figure this season:

What followed was a mixed bag of responses that, if the internet has taught me anything, will lead to David Price to not only become a trending topic later tonight, but also be mentioned in the late editions of SportsCenter.

That said, here's a sampling of some of the supportive tweets the big lefty got in response. And Hell...even pro golfer Paul Azinger got in on it!

Of all the idiots that had something to say to the Rays hurler, this last dude is right...to an extent. But then again...it needed to be said and hopefully, Price opens some eyes.

Remember 2008 when the Rays were all the rage?

All you saw on TV throughout the playoffs (outside of Frank Caliendo) were Rays fans with their blue mohawks and sellouts at Tropicana Field. Well...their attendance numbers then (an average of 22,370 a night) were virtually no different than they are now (23,047 a night through the weekend).

It appears that regardless how well the Rays do (and they're a damn good, young team, America) they can't seem to garner the support of the Bay area.

But does that really surprise you? I mean, this is an area of the United States that has a population that fluctuates based on how the weather is doing...why wouldn't their fanbase?

Fair weather fever...catch it! And while you're at it, follow David Price on Twitter...homeboy needs all the support he can get right now!

Twitter Tuesday: Logan Morrison

With a third inning single Monday against the Cardinals, Florida Marlins rookie Logan Morrison has reached base in 39 consecutive games...the second longest streak in franchise history.

The team record of reaching base safely in 47 consecutive games was established by Luis Castillo in 2002.

Another record that the 23 year-old has to be closing in on is the "most tweets in a day" given dude knocked out 145 tweets since Friday morning.

That's close to 40 a day, people!

All that aside, one of my favorite new big leaguers on Twitter is Morrison given the fact that he is trying to have a personal connection with each of his 7500-plus followers.

It's rare that you'll find anyone, much less a professional baseball player, that will respond to your thoughts and well wishes.

So do yourself a favor, give @LoMoMarlins a follow and who knows...he might just drop you a line.

With Week One of the NFL season officially in the books, it is clear that not all big leaguers are concerned about the upcoming baseball pennant races.

Thankfully, most were talking NFL and not the MTV Video Music Awards.

Twitter Tuesday: Brent Mayne

When it comes to following former and/or current Major Leaguers on Twitter...it is hard to find anyone more knowledgeable than Brent Mayne.

Sure, a guy like Jose Canseco is mad crazy and fun to follow, but that's only entertaining for a few minutes at a time.

By tweeting links to his great website, The Art of Catching, Mayne has recently offered his insight and opinions on everything from the aftermath of the Stephen Strasburg injury to the immaturity of ballplayers.

Most notably, however, is Mayne's quest to start up a glove drive.

The former catcher knows the importance of a good glove and wants to help out those less fortunate by giving them the chance to own their own mitt.

Late Monday night, Oakland reliever Craig Breslow tweeted the following:

In all seriousness, the former All-Ivy League hurler is the kind of player who is using what he's achieved on the field to hope those off of it thanks to his Strike 3 Foundation.

The Strike 3 Foundation (founded in 2008) is a charitable agency that heightens awareness, mobilizes support, and raises funding for childhood cancer research. Breslow's sister was diagnosed with thyroid cancer at the age of 14. Now, more than fifteen years later, she lives an unrestricted life as a cancer survivor.

So, hey, follow the big leaguer on Twitter and become Number 2000. Then...go nuts and follow the Strike 3 Foundation.

I'm not sure if this is just going to encourage him or not, but long ago, the guys over at Joe Sports Fan brought "Sign Guy" to the attention of the unsuspecting masses.

Basically, "Sign Guy" is a St. Louis fan who, apparently, spends his days and nights coming up with puns involving his beloved Cardinals. He then scrawls said puns on spare pieces of poster board and takes them to Busch Stadium in hopes to get on television.

Twitter Tuesday: Joe Posnanski

I'm a pretty religious follower of Sports Illustrated scribe Joe Posnanski (@JPosnanski) over on Twitter, so when he started answering Hall of Fame questions late Monday night...my ears (ummm, eyes?) perked up some.

Here are the highlights of his conversation with his followers. My thoughts are in italics.

@JPosnanski: I actually think he has a fascinating case. Not now, but career isn't over.
HOVG: The "Curacao Kind" (I just made that up!) is sitting at 400-plus homers and has ten Gold Gloves. The only other players to accomplish that...Mike Schmidt, Willie Mays and Ken Griffey Jr.

@DanSparano: Since you're getting the HOF questions, do you think Schilling is a HOFer?
@JPosnanski: I'll look closer his year, but I think yes.

HOVG: My heart says "yes"...mind says "on the bubble".

Twitter Tuesday: Baseball Hall of Fame

If you love baseball and its Hall of Fame, this weekend has got to be one of the highlights of your calendar year as Sunday marks the induction of Andre Dawson, Whitey Herzog and Doug Harvey.

Twitter Tuesday: Jennie Finch

If someone were to ask me what it takes to be part of Twitter Tuesday, I really wouldn't know how to answer.

Sometimes, it'll be someone that I've recently discovered (@Broshuis)...other times, it could be someone who simply makes me laugh (@CJNitkowski). Other times, it could be a collection of tweets that personify how the masses feel about a certain topic.

This week, all it takes is being the wife of a current Major Leaguer.

Of course, a 70-plus mph riseball, a gold medal in the 2004 Olympics and, according to TIME magazine, being the "most famous softball player in history" doesn't hurt either.

This past week, she took part in the Major League Baseball Celebrity Softball Game and shared plenty of pictures.

Twitter Tuesday: The Moyer Foundation

There's a couple of things going on with today's Twitter Tuesday.

One...I want to bring to light the continued efforts of The Moyer Foundation (you can follow them at @moyerfoundation). In 2000, big league pitcher Jamie Moyer and his wife Karen established their foundation with one goal...to offer encouragement, comfort and support to children enduring a time of profound emotional, physical or financial distress and provide opportunities for enhancing overall wellness, stability and quality of life.

Please, support and follow them...they're good people.

Second...they've graciously allowed me to re-post their monthly "Moyer Monday" features. Honestly, given the success The Hall has had with "Matt's Mailbag" and "Friday 5", the partnership makes plenty of sense.

So here we go! You asked...he answered.

Question: Who would you say was your biggest inspiration and motivation as a child/teen?

Moyer: Probably my Dad, I looked up to him and what he did, who he was.

Question: Jamie, what is your favorite baseball movie and why?

Moyer: The Natural. I just liked the way they depicted the game of baseball, enjoyed watching and trying to understand his successes and failures - the way they depicted Wonderboy and the role the bat played in the movie - as if it was almost a main character.

Question: Jamie, what catcher, past or present has helped you the most and what was it about them that worked for you?

Moyer: Danny Wilson when we worked together with the Mariners in Seattle. He understood catching and the relationship between pitcher and catcher and he understood my style. He caught me a great deal, we worked well together.

Question: Who is the best hitter or hitters that you have faced as a pitcher?

Moyer: Bernie Williams, Mike Schmidt are just a few that gave me a lot of problems.

Question: What do you do to keep in such good shape, like special diets, routines, exercises, etc?

Moyer: No special diets, stay consistent to my work regimen, as I've learned over the last few years that recovery is just as important as working out itself.
